O, Miami director P. Scott Cunningham leads a discussion with Casper, the current head of the Poetry and Literature Center at the Library of Congress, about the state of poetry in America, the process for selecting the Poet Laureate of the United States, and the role of publishing in contemporary culture. The talk is followed by a reading by award-winning poet Matthea Harvey. A reception will follow the reading.

Matthea Harvey is the author of five books of poetry—If the Tabloids are True What Are You?, Of Lamb (an illustrated erasure with images by Amy Jean Porter), Modern Life (a finalist for the National Book Critics Cirlcle Award and a New York Times Notable Book), Sad Little Breathing Machine, and Pity the Bathtub Its Forced Embrace of the Human Form. She has also published two children’s books, Cecil the Pet Glacier, illustrated by Giselle Potter and The Little General and the Giant Snowflake, illustrated by Elizabeth Zechel. She teaches poetry at Sarah Lawrence and lives in Brooklyn.

Robert Casper is the head of the Poetry and Literature Center at the Library of Congress, the organization that selects the Poet Laureate of the United States. Casper is also the founding publisher of the literary magazine jubilat and has previously worked at the Poetry Society of America and the Council of Literary Magazines and Presses.

You can enter The Conservatory through the 1433 Collins Avenue entrance, or through our 1440 Ocean Drive entrance; Betsy staff members can direct you to The Conservatory from the Ocean Drive entrance.

Valet parking is available at $20 per car (up to 4 hours). Metered parking may be available on Ocean Drive, and there are public parking garages located at 16th and Collins and 13th and Collins.
