“Some people have been unkind” is what Marilyn Monroe said about her critics. This workshop will look at poetry criticism from aesthetic, ethical and practical angles. What are the possible approaches for reviewing? What makes for a useful review? How about an entertaining one? Is negative reviewing ethical? How can we balance judgments of quality with the limitations of personal taste? We’ll look at samples of different kinds of reviews, do a reviewing exercise and discuss the practical and business aspects of reviewing. Participants may also bring in reviews of up to 800 words for critique by the instructor.

Ticket and advanced reservation is required.

Daisy Fried is the author of three books of poetry from University of Pittsburgh Press: Women’s Poetry: Poems and Advice (2013), named one of Library Journal’s five best poetry books of 2013, My Brother is Getting Arrested Again (2006), a finalist for the National Book Critics Circle Award, and She Didn’t Mean to Do It (2000), which won the Agnes Lynch Starrett Award.
