O, Miami and The Writer’s Room at The Betsy Present Poet William Corbett
A celebrated poet, publisher, and creator of community, William Corbett is a literary legend. Over more than four decades, Bill and his wife Beverly have fed, housed, and inspired many of the most important writers and artists of their time. Jhumpa Lahiri started writing her Pulitzer Prize-winning collection Interpreter of Maladies while house-sitting for the Corbetts. The comedian Denis Leary, a former student of Bill’s, honed his craft in the living room, while their dining room was the poet John Ashbery’s favorite Boston restaurant.
Corbett himself is a poet, teacher, memoirist and editor who has published books on the painters Philip Guston and Albert York and on the sculptor John Raimondi. He edited Just The Thing: Selected Letters of James Schuyler and since 1999 he has directed the small press Pressed Wafer. Corbett's most recent books of poetry are The Whalen Poem (Hanging Loose Press, 2011) and Elegies for Michael Gizzi (Kat Ran Press, 2012).
Corbett will read from his work and from the work of poets like Elizabeth Bishop, Lorine Niedecker, and James Schuyler who have inspired him. Afterwards, he will participate in a Q&A with O, Miami Director P. Scott Cunningham.
